YOU ARE HERE: Centered Life » Calling: The Basics

God's work in and through you

Ultimately, your calling is not to one thing or another, so much as from God and to God: It is God’s creative work in and through you.

Calling is not just for ordained or lay ministers or mission workers. Calling doesn’t require staying forever in the same roles or work. And, your calling may or may not be to a certain task.

You are called:

  • By God to God
  • To daily tasks and duty
  • To use your unique strengths and abilities

You are called to all arenas of life:

  • In your home, in how you love, care for, and sustain those who live with or visit you there.
  • In your work, it is doing whatever you do in the way that best serves and supports others.
  • In your community, it is seeking the common good in neighborhoods, schools and elections.
  • In your church, it is in joining with others to nurture and to be nurtured in the faith.
To paraphrase Martin Luther: Wherever you are, there you are called. Only if you absolutely cannot serve God there, must you seek another place.

God keeps calling

Issues of calling appear and reappear throughout life. Whether you’re wondering about calling for the first time, or wondering if God is calling you to a new direction, Centered Life provides the support and direction you need. Learn more about discovering your calling

Your strengths and abilities grow and expand throughout life as well. Centered Life’s Discover Your Call! Workshop helps you discover and understand your unique strengths, giving you a clearer vision of how to live out God’s call for your life.

"Finding our vocation [calling] is not just 'finding my lifework,' nor even 'finding what God wants me to do.' Finding our vocation is largely a matter of finding where God is, the God who hides in our neighbors, in ourselves, and in [the] world. Once we notice the Hidden God…at work—in the workplace, families, the community, and the church—and when we realize the part we play in [God’s] design, we have found our vocation."

God at Work, Gene Edward Veith
