Summary
Create a yellow pages style directory of church members organized by calling.
Purpose
Invite congregants to name their primary calling (and affiliated organization)
in the next church directory.
Audience
Everyone on the church mailing list
Resources
In addition to the typical “new church directory” requirements (accurate mailing
list, dedicated and detail oriented volunteers, etc.), this activity presumes a
baseline understanding of calling. Include a succinct definition of calling to
on the information form mentioned in Step 2.
Steps
- Announce the initiative through your usual
channel (bulletin, announcements, etc.)
- Provide members with a simple form including
primary calling (and affiliated organization, if available) as well as the
name, mailing address, telephone numbers, and email address.
Tips
- One congregation was not content to wait for
completed information forms to trickle in. Instead, they actively contacted
everyone on the rolls. It turns out that people found this interest in their
Monday-Saturday lives enlivening.
- This would be a good activity to combine
with a church-wide picture directory. Obtain information on callings while
families wait for their photos to be taken.
